TONY POUNDER AND HIS 1954 STANDARD TEN RALLY CAR

It would be fair to say that Tony Pounder is quite the fan of the  Standard Eight family and one prize member of his fleet is a 1954 Ten that was ‘built by the works for pre-war racer Leslie Brooke it took part in the 1955 Monte Carlo and RAC Rallies and the 1956 Monte Carlo Rally – alas without much success!’.

PWK 367 retains many unique works features, including ‘an extra capacity fuel tank’  modified rear leaf springs- ‘to cope with the weight of the extra capacity fuel tank’ plus ‘additional instrumentation and a map reading light etc.’

There was also two-speed wipers, an additional electric fuel pump, a front anti-roll bar, a sump guard, a fog lamp, twin carburettors, and finned covers for the brakes.

As Tony points out  ‘most of these features were available to private buyers in the accessories manual of 1954 although the larger fuel tank was not an option.

The twin carbs were available after the 1955 RAC rally from Alexander in Bucks and later on from Standard themselves’. The mighty Ten also appeared in a lot of Standard-Triumph Films of the Monte Carlo Rallies.

Tony came by PWK in 2001  - ‘The story I was given by a previous owner is that Mr Brooke left his wife for another woman leaving the car in the family garage.

His soon to be ex-wife padlocked the garage doors thinking that he would come back for it, but of course, he never did!

There the car slumbered from the late ‘50s through most of the ‘60s, until a boyfriend of Mr Brooke’s daughter took an interest in the car and persuaded the wife to sell’.

However, that gentleman ‘ did nothing with it and tried to sell it in the early ‘ the ‘80s but with no success. He then tried to get it professionally restored but soon ran up some large figures and there it stopped’.

By the early 1990s, the Standard Motor Club was informed of the car, and a new owner acquired it in January 1995. Six years later  Tony bought the car ‘complete and running’.

The Ten is currently ‘in dry dock but will be back soon’ – and the photo gallery gives an impression of Tony’s dedication in returning his Standard to a condition that would meet the approval of even Sir John Black.
