AUBONE BRADDON AND HIS 1967 FORD ANGLIA PICK-UP

Aubone Braddon is a gentleman who clearly appreciates the Anglia 105E family as his fleet comprises twelve examples of “The World’s Most Exciting Light Car”.

One of his rarest vehicles is a very late-model 1967 Pick-Up finished in a tasteful shade of Pina Green.

The bodywork was by  Martin Walter of Folkestone although ‘the first ones were built by a company called Kennex who built camper vans and they were taken over by Martin Walter.

The vehicle was put into production on a much bigger scale then. It is even listed in the Glass’s Guide books’.

LTA 618 F has been part of the Braddon collection for twenty years, and when he first encountered the Pick-Up ‘it had been off the road since 1980.’.

The Anglia was languishing ‘on a farm in an open ended barn in a very sorry state. I took the vehicle to KMJ Restorations in Exeter who were brave enough to take it on’.

The challenges involved replacing the entire floor – ‘only the gearbox tunnel is the original’.

The Anglia also required ‘wings, front panel, bonnet, doors and lower rear wings replacing’’.

Rather amazingly, ‘the restoration took around a year.

The mechanical side was fairly straight forward as we fitted a 1500 engine from a Mk. I Cortina and the only original mechanical component is the back axle and springs.

The bodywork was the most challenging and John Reed from KMJ Restorations was just amazing. Nothing seems to faze him’.

As for parts, Aubone remarks ‘We were very lucky that all the panels we needed were in stock in our barn.

The thing we relied on the most was having someone competent enough to do the bodywork and fabricating of panels and chassis sections that were not available.

Luckily this was well within the capabilities of John Reed at KMJ. My Dad did all the mechanical work with me assisting’.

Today Aubone finds his pick-up to be ‘a useful workhorse that is tidy but not Concours’.

He notes the Pick-Up ‘has turned out to be a great vehicle and is probably too useful for its own good -  as you can see from the photos’.

And as for the finishing touch – ‘Jeff Uren from Cortina Savage fame was a friend of mine and supplied the front struts and a nice chrome rocker cover which I treasure’.

With Thanks To – Aubone Braddon
