We wanted our last ‘Car of the Month’ award of 2020 to be extra special and the winning recipient’s classic is just that – a 1973 Porsche 914-4!

Paul Hibbert entered his example into the Lancaster Insurance Pride of Ownership display at last month’s online NEC event and was crowned the winner! Painted in period ‘’Zambezi Green’ and with classic Fuchs alloy wheels, we can see why it captured viewers’ attention.

The result of a collaboration between Volkswagen and Porsche as a replacement for the latter’s 912 model, the 914 is a two-seater mid-engine sports car that was produced between 1969 and 1976. Around 115,000 were made with this particular example manufactured in April 1973.

Paul has been the proud owner for over four years and spent the first few months of his custodianship overhauling it. It is believed that Paul is the fifth owner: “It had come into the UK in 2015 when it was bought by a well-known Porsche specialist, and they sold it to a Porsche mechanic who rebuilt the engine. When I got it the paintwork was covered in micro blisters as it had been exposed to the elements so I decided on a bare-metal restoration which I had done by Mike Brewer Motors Accident Repair in Chesterfield.”

“The interior was also retrimmed and the seats were all upholstered, it is in immaculate condition. It’s ‘matching numbers’ and has now done around 21,000kms.”

This example is very much a regularly used classic, and when possible is displayed at various shows and meets as well as enjoying a run out on the odd roadtrip!

Paul is a huge classics fan having owned many over a 20 year span. Keeping it in the Volkswagen family, he has also restored a Beetle but others in his collection of the years include Several Porsche 944s including cabriolets and Turbos, Porsche 968s and Porsche 964s.
