DVLA update on the use of black and silver number plates
23rd December, 2020
The DVLA has recently announced changes to information on vehicles displaying the old style pre-1973 black and silver number plates.
The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, which exists to uphold the freedom to use historic vehicles on the road, shared the DVLA changes on its website earlier this month.
The new rules mean that from 1st January 2021, any vehicle constructed after 1st January 1980 will not be allowed to display the black and silver number plate despite being recorded in the DVLA’s historic tax class. Only those vehicles built before the specified date will be able to legally display black and silver number plates.
Additionally, from 1st January 2021 owners will no longer be able to fit a new number plate with the Euro symbol, number plates already fixed are unaffected, and a new British Standard for number plates will be introduced from 1st September 2021.
