JASON JORDAN’S ESSEX POLICE FORD GRANADAS

I’ve always had retro or classic cars. I was just looking for a new project and found the Granada. The fact it was an old police car was an added bonus, and it’s just opened up a whole new world’. B 457 AHJ is ‘a 2.8 Automatic’, and the mileage is just under 104,000. Much of that was in the service of Essex Constabulary where Jason Jordan’s Granada Mk. II worked as a Traffic Car between 1984 and 1987. He came by the Ford some four years ago, and at that time its condition was unlikely to have impressed the Sergeant. The special equipment ‘was all just chucked on the back seat - it had not been looked after very well at all’.

Jason also remarks ‘when you start looking back, it’s really nice seeing all the different markings. I had to have the black and white checks made along with the door crests - everything else was on eBay. I paid for a professional to fit them rather than mess it up’. The US-style siren is mounted between the roof-lamps and the Granada now looks ready to patrol the A127, ever-ready to respond to errant XR3i and Astra GTE owners. By 1984 the Mk.II was approaching the end of its eight-year production run - the Mk. III would make its bow in 1985   - but it still looked highly impressive in your rear-view mirror.

AAs for the interior ‘it’s a basic GL; no sunroof and manual windows’. At least 457 features cloth upholstery rather than the vinyl found on the “Taxi” versions. Jason is still tracing the Granada’s history and has so far learned that its Fleet Number was T27 and that it was sold at Chelmsford Auctions on the 30th June 1987 for just £2209.75.

Thirty-three years later, Jason regards his Granada as a source of ‘all round enjoyment and my kids love taking her to the local shows’. Nor is it the only police car in his collection. Essex replaced T27 with a Ford Granada 2.8 Mk. III registration, D286 SNO – and incredibly Jason now owns its sister car D 287 SNO. It was demobbed in 1990 and ‘was then used privately for around a year then dry stored in a barn for 27 years’. Mr. Jordan came by it five months ago when its condition was ‘solid but very dirty and non-running’. He is presently ‘trying to locate some equipment’.

And once the Jordan Mk. III is fully restored you could almost say that Jason will be the owner of arresting pair of Fords. But we decided not to…

With Thanks To – Jason Jordan
