You really could not miss the Ford Mustang on the Lancaster Insurance stand at the 2019 Classic Motor Show.

It was a vehicle so stunning that Mr. Steven McQueen himself would have undoubtedly fallen in love with it, had he entered a time portal during the planning for Bullitt.

The combination of the RS1600 bodyshell with the 1.6-litre GT engine cost a mere £1,150 4s when it debuted some 49 years ago.

Then there was the second-generation Mini Cooper, and no matter how many times you have encountered this – yes “iconic” – car it is still a complete and utter marvel.

When the original versions debuted in 1961, they had no British rivals. At that time, the potential buyer of a compact FWD four-seater sports saloon would have otherwise considered an overseas model.

Within months, the Cooper revolutionised not only motorsport but attitudes towards fast cars.

For those of an age to remember Filofaxes and Bros CDs (although I might skip the latter), there was the MG Maestro Turbo, one of the most intriguing “hot hatchbacks” of its generation, looking resplendent in red and primed to reach 60 mph in just 6.7 seconds.

In June 1989 Car magazine remarked that ‘no hatch can better the extraordinary acceleration’.

And finally, two German cars for when I finally win the lottery – a “Flat nose” Porsche and, for the weekend a 1965 VW Type 2 Camper with a full-length sliding roof.
