Sarah Coombes - MG Owners' Club Championship

Here our sponsored driver, Sarah Coombes, talks about her past two rounds of the MG Owners’ Club Championship.

Brands Hatch – 11th and 12th May

We arrived at the track in glorious sunshine but unfortunately this didn’t last. The sky went black, the heavens opened and my nerves really stared to kick in; especially after seeing five cars come off together at the Paddock Hill bend in the races before!

Practice was half wet and it looked like this was going to continue for qualifying. Thankfully the weather dried out quickly, even if this did catch everyone out on their car set up.

I was pleased with how I drove in race one. I got used to the track quickly and made four places up and smashed two seconds off my qualifying times. Unfortunately the race ended under a red flag as my brother in laws car engine blew up.

Race two wasn’t easy. There had been a lot of accidents from the race before so the track was very oily and slippery meaning the driving conditions weren’t great.

All in all, I had an amazing weekend and achieved more than I thought I would. At the start of the meet, Brands Hatch wasn’t my favourite circuit but after this weekend it definitely now is!

Donington – 1st and 2nd June

Donington certainly didn’t go as planned!

My strategy heading into qualifying was to complete three laps to get to know the circuit, which I did. Then on lap five, I ended up blowing up my engine and being towed back to the paddock.

Essentially, I thought I could change down the gears to gear two to give me a better exit out of the esses. What I didn’t know was that it had opened up the esses in the break and removed the sausage curbs so the esses were in fact a gear three!

Needless to say I didn’t make it out for race one. Thankfully my husband, Dean, took the engine out and managed to change the top end in time for race two with the kind help of other MGOC race drivers.

The engine still wasn’t great but it got me out for race two. The plan was to see the finish line and collect points – and I did just that!
