In the second of our articles about ‘modern classics’ we hear from Andrew Evanson, our Senior Operations Manager and his pick, the Mazda MX5.

I’ve always been a big fan of the Mazda MX5, and, considering that it is the bestselling two-seater convertible sports car in history, there are plenty around to choose from. For me, it will always be the classic first generation NA models with their retractable headlamps that have the greatest appeal. Unfortunately these had to be redesigned when the second generation Mazda came along as they no longer passed pedestrian safety tests.

The Mazda celebrates its 30^th anniversary this year and we’re looking forward to joining in the celebrations. We have a number of special events lined up throughout the year. It’s all top secret for now but keep your eye on our social media pages to find out more!

With a 30 year history the MX5 has seen many changes over the years. Like most cars it has got much bigger over the years with the early models weighing only 940kg. Power has also significantly increased. The first models with a 1.6 model engine borrowed from the Mazda 323 produced a mere 115bhp, whilst the latest models, using the Skyactiv 2.0 engine, produce a whopping 184bhp and can push the little roadster from 0-60mph in just under six seconds!
