Modern Classic Monday - Jaguar XKR 100

Predicting a future classic can be a tricky exercise, particularly if you are looking at one purely as an investment. The difficultly can be finding the right time that value depreciation turns to appreciation. Of course aside from the cost, many people own and buy classics because of the pure enjoyment they bring!
In the first of a series of articles looking at ‘future classics’, we’ve asked members of the Lancaster Insurance team to select their favourite modern classic car. With the market for 70s and 80s classics remaining buoyant, we’ll look at models from the 90s and 00s which we already consider to be a true classic car.
This week we hear from Dave Youngs, our Car Club Manager and his pick, the Jaguar XKR X100. Dave says:
I’ve always been a huge fan of Jaguars and have owned several over the years. I currently have the pleasure of being the custodian of a Series 3 XJ6 Sovereign which is tucked away in the garage.
The XK8 and the later, more powerful XKR were introduced to replace the ageing, yet very capable XJS which had seen a 14 year run. Often referred to as the ‘spiritual successor to the E-Type’ the XK’s combine stunning looks with impressive performance.
The 4.0 supercharged V8 engine produces 370bhp and can propel the aluminium bodied sports tourer from 0-60mph in just 5.1 seconds; making it the fastest mainstream production Jaguar ever which certainly lives up to Jaguar’s original slogan ‘Grace, Space, Pace.’
For me, the decision to choose between the coupe and convertible model would be a tough one and this question always brings about plenty of debate on the specialist XK owners forums.
With the new Coupe versions costing around £66k, an early model can now be snapped up for less than 10% of this, although better examples will start from around £10,000 - £12,000. As with all classics, my advice would be to buy the very best example that you can afford. There are plenty available for sale so you can afford to be choosy. Higher mileages aren’t a major issue with these cars provided that they have decent service history. Test everything to make sure it works!
Values of XKR’s have been on a downward curve but better examples are now starting to command higher prices. If you’re in the market for one I’d be giving serious consideration to buying one now as, personally, I don’t think they will get any cheaper.
If you think that insuring all that power is going to cost a fortune then you could be in for a nice surprise. With Lancaster Insurance, a 1999 Jaguar XKR could cost as little as £171.20 or £189.20 with an agreed value!*”
