In the third of our ‘Modern Classic Monday’ series, we speak to Charlie North, our PR Manager, and hear her pick, the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class.
My first memory of the SLK was when I was around 13 years old. My mum came to pick me up from school in her new car that had been delivered that day and I remember thinking, wow. It was a dark blue colour, had leather seats and the roof was down.
It was glistening in the spring sun and looked absolutely fantastic, I was instantly hooked. My mum and I then drove through the picturesque and windy roads of Surrey, singing our hearts out to Shania Twain (yes, I was a fan!) and enjoyed the two seater sport coupe in all its glory! The SLK stayed with us for three years in total and I’d still love to own one myself to this day.
SLK stands for ‘Sportlich, Leicht und Kurz’, which in English, translates to ‘Sporty, Light, and Short’. It is a car that’s associated with engineering novelty and has gone through three generations in its history. We had one of the first generation (R170) models which were the first hardtop convertibles Mercedes-Benz ever built. They were produced from 1996 to 2004, whilst the second generation (R171) came between 2004/2005 and 2010 with the current version (R172) first coming out in 2011/2012.
