MG Owners’ Club Championship - Martin Wills Review of Rockingham

Rockingham Speedway was built about 15 years ago and is identical to the American stadiums for Nascar and the Indy 500. You may remember two years ago Rich Morley and I leading a parade of MG cars around the Rockingham Bowl on behalf of Lancaster insurance which won us a place in the Guinness Book of World Records! For club racing, Rockingham uses about a kilometre of the outside bowl which is really high speed and then turns infield for some very technical twists and turns to help make the racing as exciting as possible.
My qualifying time meant I started 2nd in class for both races and the times were very tight, so all the ingredients for some good close racing!
A few laps in to the first race when the leading cars caught up with some backmarkers, last year’s Champion Simon Kendrick was compromised and ended up outbraking himself at the end of the Bowl which sent him sideways into the first bend. I then took the lead which I held onto for my second win of the season in the glorious sunshine.
In the second race just five mins in, the sun turned to drizzle leaving the track like an ice rink and it was extremely hard to keep the cars on the track. Myself and Simon Kendrick (who had so far retained his lead in this race) battled literally bumper to bumper and door mirror to door mirror for the last few laps. We both showed exceptional car control and respect for each other. On the very last bend as we headed on to the bowl towards to chequered flag, I thought my better exit may grab me the win but it wasn’t quite enough. The cars went over the line side by side, split by less than 1/10 of a second.
I really enjoyed the race so don’t mind I came second (almost!)
