Hyundai Coupe Cup - Alex Cursely review of Pembrey

Rounds 3, 4 and 5 of the Hyundai Coupe Cup were held at Pembrey circuit in South Wales and we made the long haul with the Lancaster Insurance race car in tow, confident that we could turn our luck around.

Qualifying gave me a clear track which is normally a good thing but having to relearn a track I hadn’t been to in twenty years, as well as not having others to gauge myself against, saw me qualify in 5th. My worst qualifying in three seasons.

Race 1 was a good effort, having passed Mark Dickens and Kev Smiles early on to finish 3rd, with no chance of catching the two front runners. Race 2 was a little more tricky to hold onto position after battling again with Mark who eventually retired and Kev who took 3rd place leaving me to finish 4th.

Race 3 was unique for the Hyundai Coupe Cup as we decided to have a reverse grid race. This meant the top twelve from the finishing order from race 2 were reversed to make the race 3 grid - BTCC style! It was all quite frantic for the first few laps; I started in 9th and soon made my way up to 3rd before making contact twice in the chaos. There was a degree of disparity across the field of 15 racers which may have led to an unusual amount of incidents for us Coupe Cuppers. I ultimately finished 4th with ragged looking Hyundai coupe.

Next stop is Snetterton on 7th May, my home track, and I’m hoping to turn my luck around and get back to my winning ways!
