BRSCC Mazda Racing – Round 5
For Round 5 of the BRSCC Mazda Season the team took the 90 mile trip from Haverhill to the home of the British Grand Prix (Silverstone).
The Circuit
The Silverstone National Circuit is around half of the Full Grand Prix circuit utilising the old Formula 1 Pit Lane known as the heritage paddock. The Circuit is fast but not particularly technical forming a triangular shaped circuit with 3 fast straights.
For a good fast lap around Silverstone National it is key to carry as much speed as possible through the corners in preparation for the high speed straights.
Qualifying
For both groups the Qualifying sessions took place on the Saturday morning. There had been overnight rain over Friday evening but the track was dry for Qualifying.
Championship Mk1 - 3 of the drivers qualified in the A Group (Charlie Burge P4, Lewis Cannon P21 and Adrian Burge P22). The other 4 drivers qualified in the B Group (Clive Chisnall P6, Bruce Robinson P23, Chris Ginn P26 and James Love P27).
Super Series Mk3 – Qualifying was extremely close with P1 to P15 being separated by only 1 second (Joshua Jackson P3, Patrick Collins P10, Simon Woods P13 and Matt Pickford P15).
Races
Rains and storms would mean that all races had some degree of wetness with a couple of the races taking place in treacherous conditions with standing water causing the cars to aquaplane in some areas and be very slippery. As a result there were a lot of spins in the races making for interesting racing.
Highlight of the Championship races was Charlie Burge in Race 2A whose bonnet pins failed with 2 laps to go and the bonnet coming up and obscuring the windscreen. Charlie managed to continue with a mixture of looking out the small gap at the bottom and out the side window to finish an impressive 4th given the circumstances.
Highlight of the Superseries was Josh Jacksons continued success. He visited the podium 3 times and visited each step with a P3, P2 and P1 to wrap up the weekend.
On to Anglesey on the 11th and 12th August for the team!
