Car of the Month – Ford Puma

Ford launched its baby coupe in 1997 and based on proven Ford Fiesta mechanics, the car was versatile, exciting to drive and demand was instant.

The punchy 1.7 litre engine was developed in conjunction with Yamaha and could hit 60mph in just 8.8 seconds and at top speeds could reach almost 130mph. Whilst this may not be quick by modern standards, the Puma’s strength lay in the design of the chassis which offered an involving driving experience and superb handling – no small wonder really when the handling was refined by a team that included former World Champion race car driver Jackie Stewart!

The pick of the market would be the Tickford developed Racing Puma; a limited edition run of just 350 cars was brought to the market in early 2000. Finished in Ford Racing Blue, these cars had an extra 25hp and came with larger flared wheel arches and modified suspension.

Ford also launched a 1.4 and a 1.6 version of the car but we firmly believe the original 1.7 is the one to own and Puma prices are relatively cheap, for now! As with all older Fords they have a following and, with rust as the enemy, are becoming rarer. It’s not going to make a fortune overnight but as a long term investment you can enjoy -  well, what are you waiting for?
