Alex Cursley Celebrates Double Win At Rockingham

Rockingham Motor Speedway was the setting for our mid-season meet and we set out to get back to our winning ways following the frustrations at Thruxton.

Rockingham is like no other circuit in the UK. It uses half of the oval circuit and a technical infield section, all contained within vast amounts of concrete, however it’s not without atmosphere!

In qualifying, the plan was to gently warm my new tyres up over a few laps and go for it! I was pleased to see P1 come up on the pit board half way through the session, however this didn’t last long as I fell to 3rd place as I was experiencing a lack of grip in my overdriven tyres.

I began race one on the second row with a reasonable start, managing to pick off 2nd place starter and consistent improver James Goodwin, taking him on the inside of turn one of the oval on the run up to the hairpin. I then set my sights on the leader, Steve Kite. It was around lap three I got the best and fastest exit I could manage out of the final chicane, giving me the speed to out drag Steve all the way to the hairpin, forcing him to defend which slowed him down. We went round the hairpin side by side and I was on the outside on the exit, giving me the favourable inside line for next corner and the lead. Steve never let up as he followed me all the way to line but I managed to hold one and clinched my fourth win.

I was on pole for race two with Steve Kite in 2nd and young gun Will Taylforth in 3rd and we broke free from the main pack in that order.

This race was all about defending my lead from these guys as my mirrors were constantly full with the view of their cars. Again, I was being let down by my tyres as they were going off more and more as the laps went on and I wasn’t able to pull away. I made the car as wide as I could all the way to the finish line and took another win for Lancaster Insurance.

It feels great to head into the summer break with two more wins, totalling five out of eight this season. Again I would like to thank everyone at Lancaster Insurance for your huge support, and come September I will try and do it all over again for you guys at Donington Park.
