On 24th April, classic car fans up and down the country will be celebrating as the annual ‘Drive it Day’ is set to return. It’s an opportunity to throw off the dust covers and make the most of meeting fellow enthusiasts, seeing a great array of vehicles, supporting the movement and potentially driving your own classic for the first time this season.

The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Club’s ‘Drive it Day’ has grown hugely over the past few years and as a result there are no shortages of things to do on the day, including events taking place at Brooklands and Bicester. Many car clubs will also create their own special event, which will probably be in the form of a road run or cavalcade. 

Drive it Day is the perfect way to celebrate with the rest of the classic community as well as getting some great tips to safeguard your vehicle for the season ahead. West Midlands Police PC Simon Barrett comments: “As well as preparing your classic for the summer by way of its appearance, you should also consider security of the vehicle when parked in a public place and also when it’s in storage. Here we give a few pointers:

The use of additional tested and approved security products such as steering wheel locks or pedal boxes is imperative, this is because classic vehicles are often missing the security features found on more modern cars.

Security of your garage is vital too, a strong outer garage door with a high standard of lock and door hardware to ‘Sold Secure’ standard is critical. Also consider use of a bollard to block the vehicle in; however this must be an approved product installed in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.

In addition the use of forensic marking kits makes individual components of your classic more identifiable, with a unique DNA solution that is visible under ultra violet light."
